When you first start your diet one of the things you will learn right away is that maintaining a food journal is very helpful. Keeping your foods journal not only helps you see clearly what you are eating, it helps you see what you are not eating. For example, after keeping a food journal for a few days, you might see that you are not consuming very many vegetables but that you are consuming lots of sugar and bad carbohydrates. Writing all of it down will help you see precisely which parts of your diet program really need to change as well as how much exercise you are going to need to do to make sure that you keep your caloric intake in check.

Write down the time that youre consuming stuff. This can help you figure out when you feel the most hungry, when you are prone to snack and what you can do about it. After several days youll see that even if you might be eating lunch at the same time every day, you are still hungry an hour later. You should also be able to discover whether or not you are eating since youre bored. This is very important mainly because, once they are revealed, you can find other ways to fill those moments than with unhealthy foods.

Record your mood while you eat. This really helps to show you whether or not you use food as a response to emotional issues. This may also show you whether or not you gravitate for certain foods based on your mood. Many people will reach for junk foods when we are worried, angry or depressed and will be more likely to choose healthier options when we are happy or content. When you look closely at how you eat during your different moods and emotional states, you will be able to keep similar but healthier alternatives around for when you need those snacks--you might also start talking to someone who can help you figure out why you try to cure your moods with food.
